What is a residence card?

ImageImage

The residence card, during the period of its validity, confirms the identity of the foreigner during his stay in the territory of the Republic of Poland and entitles, together with the travel document, to repeatedly cross the border without the need to obtain a visa.

Sample residence card

A residence card is a document issued to a foreigner who has been granted:

  • Temporary residence permit
  • Permanent residence permit

Who must have a residence card?

What does the length of a residence permit depend on?

A residence card is one way to legalize your stay in Poland. In order to legally stay in Poland, a foreigner must have a residence document, i.e. a visa, a temporary residence permit (residence card) or enjoy visa-free travel (if they are citizens of one of the countries covered by this possibility).

The period of validity of the residence card depends on the basis on which it was issued (According to Article 243(1) of the Law on Foreigners):

  • temporary residence permit - is valid for the period for which the permit was granted in accordance with the indicated residence purposepermanent
  • residence permit - is valid for 10 years from the date of its issuance

You can renew your residence card by submitting an application no later than the last day of your legal stay. Submitting your application on time allows you to stay legally in Poland until the decision is issued.
